In 1871 Benjamin Baltzly, a Montréal studio photographer, got the gig to document the terrain and resources of the Interior Plateau of BC long before Google Earth was ever thought of. He missed connections, couldn’t find camping gear once in Victoria, nor transport from Yale. He and the survey crew had to walk up the Fraser Canyon to reach Kamloops. Their luck wasn’t much better here but Baltzly would produce some of the most lucid photographs of the area from that period.
Interior Monologues features a range of prints, photos, and excerpts from Baltzly’s log. The exhibit provides glimpses of pastoral life set amid the spectacular topography of BC. Come see amazing pictures from the photo gig with more ups, downs and drama than the mountains Baltzly traversed. This is a world class exhibit.
