Lines and curves have a significant compositional role that focuses the viewer’s attention on some part of the image and influences the interpretation of the image. Lines and curves can also add a sense of movement.

Open Theme – Images submitted into this competition can come from a wide range of topics. For this competition, photographers are encouraged to submit their best artistic or documentary images that express their interests and passions in photography.

For this year, we are combining our Nature and Wildlife competitions by creating five separate themes: Botanical, Insects, Reptiles & Amphibians, Landscape, Nature, Wildlife

A black and white work fitting from the very dark grey (black) to the very clear grey (white) is a monochrome work with the various shades of grey. A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category. On the other hand a black and white work modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) to stand in the colour category.

A portrait image will primarily contain the likeness of a person(s) in which the facial expression is predominant but can be extended to include the entire body and the background. The object of the portrait is to capture the person’s personality and mood as the focal point or as a component of moment in time. The image can be posed, candid or environmental. Street photography image is considered environmental.

"A variety of subject matter is accepted including abstracts. The photographer can make enhancements in the camera as well as modifications and enhancements using digital imaging software to improve the overall presentation of the original captured image." - CAPA Canada

There must be obvious manipulation which may change natural color, form, shape or any combination of these three within the image. The original image must have been taken by the entrant.

Black and White photography is where the image produced has a single hue rather than recording the colours. This includes all forms of black and white photography which contains tones of grey ranging from pure black to pure white.

Nature Photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archaeology. The image can include landscapes, geologic formations, weather phenomena, and extant organisms as the primary subject matter.
